THE ADVANCED IMPROV PROGRAM

Advanced courses that let improvisers further develop their skills on stage and in the classroom

The Advanced Improv Program offers courses that develop specific skills, styles, and formats that can be taken to the stage. These elective courses build on the skills learned in The Training Program, and may be taken in any order. Through these courses, improvisers gain new specialized competencies that they can use to improve their performance on stage.

Instructor permission may be needed for some courses.

ADVANCED ELECTIVES

Advanced Electives dive deeper into the basics of improv that are introduced in the Training Program.

These courses are designed for improvisers who have completed the Training Program, or who have at least 2 years of improv experience.

SCENES | ADVANCED ELECTIVE

Scenes are the backbone of all improvised theatre; and we owe it to the audience to give them something more than just talking heads. In this course we look at how stagecraft, theatricality, and acting skills can help us be more charismatic on stage and make our scenes more appealing to the audience.

CHARACTERS | ADVANCED ELECTIVE

A strong character can drive any scene forward; great characters make great scenes. In this course we learn new ways to create and develop interesting, grounded, watchable characters. We develop a barrel of tricks and tools to bring truth to your characters, giving them a distinctive Point of View, and how to use that to fuel your scenes.

TECHNIQUE | ADVANCED ELECTIVE

This course will offer you insights to advanced techniques that will make your improv more dynamic and interesting to watch. We’ll focus on things like organic transitions, ghost entrances, dramatic pauses, as well as a handful of other advanced techniques that you can add to your Improv Toolbox.

FLOW | ADVANCED ELECTIVE

This course puts an in-depth focus on a variety of specific edits and scenic transitions, exploring how and when to use them to most effectively explore our ideas and impulses through external scene connections.

PERFORMANCE ELECTIVES

Performance Electives introduce advanced formats, structures, and styles of improv performance.

These courses include a Performance Showcase.

FREE FORM | PERFORMANCE ELECTIVE

Free Form Improv utilizes all the tools in your improviser toolbelt, combining scenes and elements of game together seamlessly with strong characters and relationships. This course approaches Free Form by focusing on group play as a means of exploring ideas through story and game.

HAROLD | PERFORMANCE ELECTIVE

Our approach to The Harold helps players find new ways to energize and improve their improv brains and impulses that can be applied to all formats and structures. This course is an in-depth exploration into the structure, patterns, themes, and stories that make up Chicago’s infamous format.

*Pre-requisites: Completion of our Development Levels or equivalent experience

STORY | PERFORMANCE ELECTIVE

This course is an exploration of narrative structures in improvisation. and introduces the character archetypes that storytellers rely on to captivate their audience, and how to use these story elements in Narrative and Non-Narrative improv formats.

*Pre-requisites: Completion of our Development Levels or equivalent experience 

MUSIC IMPROV | PERFORMANCE ELECTIVE

This course is designed to get you comfortable with improvised singing and introduce you to the basic structures needed for an improvised musical. We’ll go over everything you need to get you comfortable with Musical Improvisation, sing songs in scenes, and build to a fully improvised Musical, complete with songs, choreography, characters, storyline, and jazz hands!

*Pre-requisites: Completion of our Foundations Levels or equivalent experience

SHORT FORM | PERFORMANCE ELECTIVE

Being fast, funny and presentational is an improvisational skill that can be honed just like any other! This course is an in-depth exploration on what makes a Short Form Games fun to play and watch. We will learn getting into a scene, establishing the specifics, wringing laughs out of every scenario, and delivering that killer finishing joke that brings on the edit.

*Pre-requisites: Completion of our Foundations Levels or equivalent experience

DROP-INS

Single sessions with our instructors that cover a different topic that is near and dear to their hearts.

INTENSIVES

Back-to-Back days focused exclusively on one topic or theme.
