CLASSES

COMEDY CLASSES IN ENGLISH

We have been teaching comedy classes in Tampere since 2011, cultivating an environment where anyone and everyone is encouraged to join in, have fun, and learn about comedy. Our courses have created an entire new generation of performers who have helped to cultivate a vibrant comedy scene in Finland.

Our students are engineers, musicians, designers, students, actors, athletes, writers, and more, from both Finland and abroad. Many of our students perform with YesFinland in an Ensemble, a House Team, or for private functions, and still more students perform on any of the dozens of improv teams in Tampere and across Finland.

The core of what we teach lies in the YesFinland Improv Program, a 3-Tiered Structure that offers courses for players of all type of experience. However, we also run regular drop-in classes, give free jams, and offer workshops from local and international teachers.

Take a look at The Improv Program below. Check out our Calendar to find out what courses are coming up, and contact us if you have any questions!

THE IMPROV PROGRAM

We teach comedic Improvisation from an organic Chicago-Style approach combined with more theatrical elements of European Improvised Theatre, meaning our students develop a balanced and Internationally focused understanding of Improvisation.

The YesFinland Improv Program is a 3-Tiered Structure designed to take you from Novice to Performer, providing opportunities for players of every level to further develop their craft. Students are able to choose their own study path, based on their interests and commitment ability.

Students who complete the Performance Courses will be armed with the skills to competently perform a variety of types of improv on stage, audition for shows, or develop their own teams and concepts.

INTRODUCTION TO IMPROV

BOOTCAMP
COME PLAY WITH US!

Improv is a great way to meet new friends, let loose, and have a lot of fun, but it can feel overwhelming when you first start.

Bootcamp is designed to ease you into improvisation through playful games and exercises that introduce the core concepts of being an improviser.

We learn how to play with each other, how to say yes, how to build a group mind, and how to embrace failure.

FUNDAMENTALS COURSES

PLAY
THE HEART OF IMPROVISATION

Improvisation is all about Play. Through play, improvisers are able to connect to one another, and their audience, and have a lot of fun while doing it.

This delightful course dives deep into the core skills of improvised comedy. We will learn how to be inspired by others, build an ensemble, develop characters, and create improvised environments together.

SCENE
THE FOUNDATION OF IMPROV

This course is an introduction to our unique approach to scenework. We will focus on everything that goes into creating a scene, from where to start, how to navigate the scene together, and knowing when it is over.

DEVELOPMENT COURSES

The Development Courses provide an opportunity to continue to develop your skills. These courses can be taken in any order, and are perfect for someone who has completed the Fundamentals Courses, or who has at least one year of previous improv experience outside of YesFinland.

Development courses are divided into two categories: Longform Development & Shortform Development.  Students who complete a minimum of two courses in a single category may advance to the Performance Courses.

LONGFORM DEVELOPMENT

FLOW
CONNECTING SCENES TOGETHER

In longform improv we create a series of scenes which follow a story, a theme, an idea or an impulse.

This course introduces ways to string scenes together through edits, transitions, and other connective elements that help us flow smoothly from one scene to the next.

CHARACTER
GREAT CHARACTERS MAKE GREAT SCENES

A strong character can drive any scene forward.

In this course we learn new ways to create and develop interesting, grounded, watchable characters. We develop a barrel of tricks and tools to bring truth to your characters, giving them a distinctive Point of View, and how to use that to fuel your scenes.

ADVANCED SCENE
NEXT-LEVEL SCENEWORK

This course takes scenework to the next level by focusing on connecting to our scene partner and making great scenes.

With a focus on strong characters, you will learn how to quickly and organically discover your Point Of View, and how to follow it as it leads you through the scene. This course also introduces the concept of the Game of the Scene.

GAME
FINDING THE FUNNY

Every scene has a game (actually, lots of them). If we understand how to play that game, we open new avenues that are only possible in improv.

This course explores how to identify the game of the scene, and how to extract the comedy within. We will focus on finding the patterns in the scene and exploring them through heightening. This is a great way to make our scenes funnier and bolder.

SHORTFORM DEVELOPMENT

GAMES
FAST PACED. QUICK LAUGHS.

Shortform Games are one of the most recognizable elements of improvisation. Their high energy and quick pace mean they are always huge crowd pleasers.

This course takes you head first into the world of shortform games. We will focus on three types of Shortform Games: Scenic, Guessing & Genre Games. We’ll learn the structures of these games, practice how to make them successful, and play them hard.

GIMMICKS
TRICKS OF THE TRADE

This course adds more games to your shortform repertoire. We will focus on three types of Shortform Games: Group Games, Back Line, & Gimmick Games.

We’ll learn the structures of these games, practice how to make them successful, and play them hard.

MUSIC
SINGING IS EASY

This is a crash-course in improvised singing. We’ll learn about improvised singing, rhyming, and how to mimic Musical Theatre energies to help you succeed, even if you “can’t sing”.

We’ll learn simple song structures, as well simple techniques to unlock the magic of musical improv. We will package these new skills into a variety of Musical Short Form games to showcase your talents.

PERFORMANCE COURSES

Once their skills are developed, students can take one of our Performance Courses. These courses use the skills developed in earlier classes and refine them, preparing students to take the stage. Each course focuses on a different style of performance, and teaches students the structure and elements necessary to perform in each style.

Performance Courses are intended for students who have taken a minimum of two Development Courses, or improvisers who have a minimum of 2 years experience performing.
